I was commissioned by Real Woman Magazine to photograph Courtney Banghart, then head coach of Princeton women’s basketball, for a cover story at Princeton University’s Jadwin Gymnasium.

Courtney joined Princeton in 2007 and built an impressive program, including an undefeated regular season in 2015. That same year, Fortune named her among its World’s 50 Greatest Leaders. The assignment called for a series of editorial portraits that reflected both her role as a coach and the environment where she led the Tigers.

Editorial Portraits at Jadwin Gymnasium

Photographing Courtney inside Jadwin gave us the opportunity to use the basketball facility itself as part of the portraits rather than treating it simply as a backdrop. We worked through several locations and lighting setups to give the magazine a range of images for the cover and interior story.

As with most editorial assignments, our time with the subject was limited, so the locations and lighting were planned to keep the shoot moving efficiently while still creating distinctly different photographs.

From Assignment to Publication

The final portraits were used for Real Woman Magazine’s feature on Courtney and her leadership of the Princeton women’s basketball program. Seeing the photographs move from the shoot into the finished editorial design is always one of the rewarding parts of an assignment.

Editorial & Commercial Portrait Photography

Editorial portrait assignments often require creating a range of photographs within a limited amount of time. Location planning, lighting and coordination with the publication’s creative team help make that possible while still leaving room for the unexpected moments that often make the strongest portraits.

I’m a Philadelphia-based commercial and editorial photographer working with magazines, agencies and companies throughout Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and beyond.
